My Life To Live...

Posted by
Pavan Kaul (Mumbai, India) on 24 February 2011 in People & Portrait and Portfolio.

Unlike a drop of water which loses its identity when it joins the ocean, man does not lose his being in the society in which he lives. Man's life is independent. He is born not for the development of society alone, but for the development of his self.
~B. R. Ambedkar

I am enjoying this series of "dark sea people' very much, and as always an excellent quote.

The man is so little in the big sea. But still he is he.

24 Feb 2011 6:05am

Mathilde Collot from Fontainebleau, France

Live his life like losing! A picture that perfectly illustrates this fragile balance. Happiness, joy like when the waves even beauty can hurt! Like this chiaroscuro and the blades of money! We're so small!

Seul face à l'océan comme pour l'apprivoiser doucement...
Belle image!

24 Feb 2011 9:10am

Andrew from Belgium

Brilliant!! The mood, the exposure and the moment. Its dark..like the forecast. Doomed loneliness ahead my friend. The image strongly suggests that too as much as the quote. Reminds me of the Hippies and their need for independence. Almost always led them to depths of neurotic depression. and instability. But that is what works for you. Go your way. Best wishes.

24 Feb 2011 3:11pm

Franz from Baden, Austria

this is a magnificent take, parvan! full of atmosphere and foreboding, due to the prevailing dark tones. the brighter patch of water around the lone person forms a very effective contrast and adds the final touch to the picture!

24 Feb 2011 3:11pm

Christine Walsh from Astoria, NY, United States

Ah, this young man and the sea - could have gone in a different direction but I really like the quote. I also like the light surrounding him.

awesome shot man!

24 Feb 2011 3:47pm

Rick from Toronto, Canada

Potently atmospheric, almost ambivalent in its moody power according to the subjectivity of each viewer. The sea is heaving here, the human figure is but a twig against such depth of natural power and mystery. Again, resonant beyond the conscious plane.

What a wonderful moving shot. Not only for the solitude while facing the wide expanse of the ocean, ready to take a plunge, with courage and a sense of destiny, but also for the dark mood of the b.w. giving this shot even more import and meaning. Something you specialize in!

The water looks as thick and dark as the bark on a tree and the lone figure is lost in the grooves.
