Once Again I Walk Alone...

Posted by
Pavan Kaul (Mumbai, India) on 19 February 2011 in People & Portrait and Portfolio.

Where do I go from here
Tell me, where do I go from here
You said you’d take me through the years
So where do I go from here

My Spotlighted Images

Valérie Simonnet from paris, France

Elégance et douceur de la figure et de l'atmosphère.

19 Feb 2011 5:11am

Rick from Toronto, Canada

This is resonating on subconscious and poignant levels that go far beyond the immediate perceptions of a beautiful photograph, which this certainly is. Her profile against the crash of surf... note perfect. Bravo.

19 Feb 2011 5:25am

@Rick: Thank you Rick. That is probably because I shoot very instinctively, from my subconscious, without any planning whatsoever....the picture is forming even as I am shooting...all I am aware of at that moment is the emotions running through my body and mind and that is what makes it work for me...finally in the post I work to bring the image to depict the emotion as closely as possible to what I had felt... This one is very very close.

Phil David Morris from Saskatoon, Toronto, New York, Canada

Wonderful glimpse into this persons most private life seems to be had in this
most amazing photo, like all your visual work it really makes me think, there
is amazing human pathos in this amazing capture, it makes me want to see
the work of your movies, which this could be a meaningful vignette of.

19 Feb 2011 5:32am

@Phil David Morris: Thank you Phil. My photography is very personal to me as I neither have to make a living out of it nor am I dependent on funding from other sources to make it possible, unlike my movies where the reverse is true. Hence my films are not what I had set out to do, well not yet, but yes, you will certainly find many glimpses of the same work that you see here. But I still hold the dream and someday I hope to have the opportunity to make a film that will qualify as world cinema:)

Stephen Phillips from San Francisco, United States

To my experience - it is really difficult to have an image that is completely not in focus that still works well. This is a powerful example of one that does. Excellent motion and a silhouette as well. A very strong image, Pavan.

19 Feb 2011 6:51am

@Stephen Phillips: Thank you Stephen. I have always been very drawn to the power of unorthodox use of focus. I have used it very often in my films. Here it was a very deliberate choice. I could well have cranked up the ISO to 3200 and shot at 1/125th sec... So glad this works for you:)

Rayak from Paris, France

Excellent contrast between the woman and the waves behind. Great picture.

19 Feb 2011 7:23am

fulgent from la roche sur yon, France

ombre et flou ,nice ,good day

19 Feb 2011 7:25am

larans from Lund, Sweden

Wonderful combination of words and image, that makes this a very interesting photo.
It makes me wonder if your "depart from established practice of image compositio" (going to the left = going back and that she is placed just going out from the picture) are a deliberate choice or...For me it works anyway and gives a new tense in the picture.

19 Feb 2011 8:02am

@larans: Yes Larans...nothing is just by chance:) Thank you so much for looking so deeply...:)

DULCIE from Danville, CA, United States

A beautiful moody shot. It provokes much thought as I ponder the possible meaning of the image and words. A tender study.

19 Feb 2011 8:19am

Stephen from Canberra, Australia

Inspired shot - even more so with this song lyric! I love the softness of the silhouette set against the stormy bokeh effect you get with the depth of field.

19 Feb 2011 8:22am

El pare from Prepirineu, Andorra

The image and its presentation clearly shows the idea expressed in the title.

Marie LC from Entre montagnes et Bretagne, France

I like this vagueness of movement, almost unreal image of an unknown crossing the life

19 Feb 2011 9:45am

SOUL AFLAME from United Kingdom

As though walking through a moment in time, a single frame and she has passed, contemplative, reflective, absorbed in thought at that very moment. Beautifully observed and captured as for that one moment we journey with her. The rolling waves and motion blur add melancholy, pricking my conscience, making me feel that I almost understand her contemplative thoughts. Outstanding photography, Pavan.

19 Feb 2011 10:02am

@SOUL AFLAME: Thank you Paul...the sun had already set and in that fading light it was an inspired moment...My focus was on her and despite the motion blur that was inevitable I knew I had a picture!

Journey Photographic from Australia

Wonderful mood, very effective silhouette.

fereshteh from Iran

A beautiful shot..

19 Feb 2011 10:07am

Nitin from Shanghai, China

Wonderful shot - the silhouettes and your text are so profound. Reminds me of my times abroad (which are most of last 4 years) and my times in a boarding school as a kid - lots of friends still lonely. Sometimes you want to be alone and sometimes u just don't want to be alone - with me it was the former when i was younger and it's the latter now that I'm getting older. Cheers Pavan!

19 Feb 2011 5:33pm

Michael from Chester, United Kingdom

A shot that is good for all the wrong reasons, and its subtle imperfections allows us a closeness that is almost intimate. A image with great feeling.

19 Feb 2011 5:57pm

@Michael: Thank you Michael, for one of the best comments I have ever received! I love bending the rules and like to go where one is not supposed to, for only then we can discover ourselves!

19 Feb 2011 7:53pm

Rick from Toronto, Canada

Hello again, Pavan. I want to thank you for that meaty comment reply. What you are sharing there, and something I feel in my music composing, is quintessential "channeling" of pure intuitive impetus. A beautiful way to pursue the ineffable goal of coming as close as possible to the amazing complexity of our emotions in a moment of inspiration. Your photography is resonating for reasons that exist in a spiritual and deeply conscious realm where we haven't the linguistics to convey what our primal receptors are picking up on, and although I sound like a druggie here (I'm anything but), that's as close to summing up how I feel on the topic as I dare reach for! All the best with your cinematic art; it is a ruthless money business far too often and yet beautiful works manage to make it through the gauntlet. I hope to one day see one of your pieces receiving a grand reaction at the Toronto International Film Festival, Or Sundance, or anywhere that appreciates the true art within that important mode of expression. :)

¨‘°ºO Dutçh Oº°‘¨ from Neverwhere, United States

Your title reminds me of another song by Green Day called Boulevard of Broken Dreams.

"My shadow's only one that walks beside me
My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
Til then I walk alone"

Very poetic photo Pavan :)

19 Feb 2011 10:32pm

Steve Rice from Olympia, United States

She seems much too young to be walking alone on the beach with the crashing waves behind her. But, I guess misfortune can strike at any age. We simply have to deal with it. This is a powerfuliy evocative image, Pavan. Brilliantly done!

19 Feb 2011 11:55pm

Pavan, my friend, can't tell you how I've been drawn into the melancholy of your capture (especially when read along with the lyrics) and how hard to pull myself out! Despite the blurry image (don't wrong me, the blur is impeccable to me), I seem to be feeling what she's feeling... one of the simplest, yet most exquisite and emotional photo I've seen for a long while!!!

I feel sad for her, but a song came to mind:
When you walk through a storm, Keep your chin up high, And don't be afraid of the dark.
At he end of the storm, Is a golden sky, And the sweet silver song of a lark.
Walk on through the wind,Walk on through the rain,
Tho' your dreams be tossed and blown.Walk on, walk on With hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone,You'll never walk alone.
"Carousel" - Rodgers & Hammerstein
